Home Run Scholars, Program DirectorJays Care Foundation | Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club After leading 6 weeks of successful virtual summer camp, Jays Care and Toronto Community Housing are joining forces to offer children aged 6-12 the chance to participate in a series of fun and educational after school clubs.

Program Directors will be responsible for planning and leading outcome-based after school programming for up to 50 participants and youth ages 6-12 living in Toronto Community Housing throughout the school year.

Given current COVID-19 related health and safety concerns, this role is primarily designed to offer participants living in Toronto Community Housing access to reliable and fun daily VIRTUAL after school programming.

This means that Program Directors will be leading programming for groups of students each day using the virtual platform Zoom as the space and place for kids to meet.

This role will be fulfilled from home and will require access to a phone and a computer.

Candidates should have extensive experience running recreational programs for children and youth as well as experience designing program curriculum that engages participants in meaningful ways.

The role begins in January with one week of training and planning time, followed by a series of 6 week terms where students register for one or more Home Run Scholars clubs.

Candidates interested in the role are expected to identify two of the clubs listed below that they are keen to design curriculum for as well as facilitate and include these clubs in their cover letter.

The Art Hub Looking for ways to explore your artistic side?

The Art Hub is a club for youth looking to learn new creative techniques, enhance their artistic skills, collaborate with peers, and create connections through art.

Youth will learn and discover new ways to be creative through drawing, painting, sketching, and more Candidates should have:
– Experience leading groups and demonstrating skills required for a wide array of art techniques and creative projects
– The ability to develop and implement a 6 week arts STEM Club The STEM club is an informal way for youth to explore all the aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) through fun and interactive activities.

The STEM challenges participants to think outside the box and ignite new interests.

Youth will participate in a variety of science experiments, build and engineer different projects, and problem-solve using critical thinking skills.

World Explorers Did you know that the continents shift at about the same rate as your fingernails grow?

The World’s Explorers Club is looking for youth who want to learn more about the world we live in and all about the people that live on it.

Youth will learn about different countries, cultures and discover the many secrets the world has to offer through activities, exciting lesson plans and fun projects.

– An interest/experience in working in STEM
– The ability to create activities/experiences that inspire kids to engage with STEM

The Detectives Academy is a club for youth that want to put their problem-solving skills to the test.

The club will challenge youth to solve puzzles, investigate mysteries and participate in a series of fun escape rooms.

The Fun and Fitness Club This club features a series of high-energy, fun and engaging games and activities that keep youth moving and active.

From Kobe challenges, to scavenger hunts, from whistle fitness, to the Amazing Race
– this club will keep youth on their toes while they laugh and engage with peers their own age.

Candidates should have:
– An interest in puzzles, brain teasers, riddles, board games, mysteries, etc.

– The ability to create and facilitate fun and dynamic problem-solving activities such as escape rooms in an engaging way for all age groups
– The ability to develop and implement a 6-week detective program for a variety of ages Candidates should have:
– Experience leading high energy, kid friendly programming in a physically engaging environment
– Innovative programming ideas for keeping kids active and engaged over a virtual platform
– The ability to develop and implement a 6-week fitness program for a variety of ages Coding 4 Kids Are you interested in all things computers?

Have you ever wondered how websites and video games are made?

Coding 4 Kids is a club where youth get a crash course in the world of coding.

Participants can expect to learn the basics of coding through a series of fun on-line activities.

The Dance Club This aspect of our Home Run Scholars program is set to empower kids to participate in an after-school dance club.

Participants will learn fun, high quality choreography and different dance styles, while making friends and enhancing their coordination and self-esteem.

Candidates should have:
– A basic understanding of coding and easy programs to use to teach it
– The ability to teach coding through in a fun and engaging way through a variety of activities
– The ability to develop and implement a 6-week coding program for a variety of ages Candidates should have:
– Experience teaching creative movement and dance choreography classes and open to learning other dance styles
– The ability to develop and implement a 6-week dance program for a variety of ages
– Professional dance experience is preferred REPORTS TO: Program Specialist, Inner City ProgramsTERM: January 25th, 2021 through to May 5th, 2021COMPENSATION: ($18/hour
– 3:15PM to 6:15PM, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week) RESPONSIBILITIES: PROGRAM PLANNING
– Design a virtual 6 session after school club schedule ensuring that each session builds off of learning from the last and that participants have a chance to learn and connect with each other;
– Prepare tools and online resources to set your virtual site up for success (i.e.

pro-active tools for preventing challenging behaviours and celebrating camper successes, tactics for developing a positive club culture, activities that will bring each afternoon of programming to life, organizational tools that will help your team plan and implement great programs each day, etc.);
– Connect with all registered families on an ongoing basis to develop rapport, address any issues and adjust programming to best suit participants’ ages/needs/interests;
– Develop clear plans for effectively training participants in all required safety procedures.

– Participate in virtual and on-line training to best prepare for the role;
– Model best-practices with participants, families and fellow staff to help them envision what success looks like;
– Facilitate daily debriefs with partner staff to identify big successes and areas for growth and development in virtual programming; DAY-TO-DAY PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION
– Create a warm, safe, fun and welcoming environment for staff and participants each day;
– Ensure that each day of virtual club programming offers the highest quality of programming to all participants (including a clear schedule, a variety of well-planned activities such as team builders and nightly challenges, a chance for participants to develop skills and self-confidence, and a chance for them to build meaningful and positive connections with peers and staff);
– Facilitate activities in ways that inspire participants to engage, laugh and connect with each other;
– Manage and troubleshoot any tech issues that arise that limit participants’ abilities to participate fully in programming;
– Ensure that effective safety protocols are in place, including physical, emotional, and online safety measures;
– Ensure that participants understand behaviour expectations and that staff are creating programming that promotes positive behaviours; MANAGE CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS
– Create and implement behaviour management strategies that promote positive behaviours;
– Address any behaviour concerns immediately using approved behaviour management protocols (i.e.

creating behavioural contracts, communicating with parents, creating and implementing behavioural management tools, etc.);
– Resolve and create action plans for internal conflicts among staff, parents, community organizations, and/or participants; ADDRESS SAFETY CONCERNS
– Ensure that all aspects of virtual clubs are designed to support an emotionally and physically safe online experience for all participants and staff;
– Make all decisions using a risk management lens;
– Ensure that all safety concerns that arise during clubs are properly managed in a timely fashion (i.e.

responded to effectively, communicated to parents, reported to supervisors); ADMINISTRATION
– Ensure all administrative duties are effectively completed (i.e.

participant information is up to date and safely stored, including: participant attendance, staff time sheets, incident/accident reports, etc.)
– Ensure that the club calendar for the term (6 weeks) is completed and sent to your supervisor as well as participants/parents in advance with any required materials or pre-work activities;
– Inform parents of important dates and document all essential communication regarding parental and/or camper concerns; EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION: Completion or progress towards a University Degree and/or College Diploma in disciplines surrounding Child and Youth, Recreation, Social Work, Sport and/or Community Programming, Community Development, Teaching EXPERIENCE Required (must have):
– Extensive experience facilitating recreational programming for participants
– Experience in program planning, implementation and evaluation of outcome-based programs
– Working knowledge of current issues, challenges and opportunities in Toronto Community Housing
– Professional experience in the public and/or the not-for-profit sector
– Excellent communication abilities: strong writing skills, excellent command of the English language
– Highly organized with the ability to multi-task, a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
– Team Player.

Ability to see the big picture goals of the organization and contribute on day-to-day tasks
– Willingness to work long hours and outside of regular 9-5 schedule
– Willingness to work through a virtual setting Desired (asset):
– Experience working with children living at or below the poverty line
– Experience managing, mentoring and coaching adults
– Experience running virtual programs on Zoom IT KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED: Required (must have):
– Knowledge of Microsoft programs
