Job Description: Reporting to the Manager, Employee and Labour Relations, the Employee and Labour Relations Officer is responsible for supporting the Labour Relations team in the operational matters of labour and employee relations.

The incumbent will conduct research and provide recommendations regarding the interpretation of collective agreements; will coordinate various labour relations initiatives; and will assist with gathering and syntheses of information related to grievances, arbitrations, and investigations.

The position provides subject matter expertise on multiple Collective Agreements.

The incumbent will support activities related to negotiating, maintaining, and ensuring adherence to the College’s collective bargaining agreements.

The incumbent is directly involved in grievance meetings and the preparation of case files, including necessary background research on specific aspects of the case.

The Employee and Labour Relations Officer builds relationships with both Union Locals and other internal and external stakeholders in order to ensure a fair and equitable approach to labour relations, with the goal of achieving a harmonious employee-employer relationship and a labour relations environment that is positive and productive.

Required Qualifications: Three (3) year diploma/degree in Human Resources or a related field; Certified Human Resources Professional/Leader (CHRP/CHRL); Five (5) years of relevant experience in a unionized work environment; Experience in a post-secondary educational institution would be considered an asset; The incumbent must have knowledge of: Collective Agreements Terms and conditions of employment for non-unionized staff The Arbitration processes General Legislation and practices related to employment and Labour Law Case management processes The incumbent must have: Ability to analyze complex information, and to define and solve problems Ability to investigate and analyze claims information and to determine conclusions Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare reports Knowledge of current and emerging legislation, issues and trends as appropriate to the position.

Excellent organizational/project management skills; Ability to manage multiple conflicting demands and deadlines; Ability to work well under stress and pressure; Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, etc.), and familiarity with HRIS Systems, would be considered an asset; Must possess excellent communication skills, both spoken and written, to communicate effectively with the public; Ability to work independently as well as within a team; Excellent listening and interpersonal skills; Respect for a strict code of confidentiality and ethics.

This position requires on-site work at Algonquin College’s Woodroffe (Ottawa) Campus.

This position is eligible for hybrid work in conjunction with the College ‘s Flexible Work Arrangement .
