Senior Manager HNW Planning Strategic Initiatives

BMO Financial Group

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted November 12, 2018.

Under the direction of the Director, Wealth Planning Delivery and Practice Management the Senior Manager, HNW Planning Strategic Initiatives is a key member of the BMO Wealth Planning and Advisory Services team responsible HNW planning delivery model, financial planning tools, HNW planning strategic initiatives, and integration risk management and strategies (insurance) into the planning experience.

Key Accountabilities

HNW Planning Strategic Initiatives (40%)

  • Responsible for the HNW planning delivery model, research, financial planning tools, and integrate risk management and strategies (insurance) into the planning experience.

  • Responsible to help define and deliver cross border-planning offer and support HNW financial planning delivery across multiple delivery channels

  • Provide HNW planning Subject Matter Expertise (advanced tax, estate, insurance, business succession, US cross border) supporting Wealth and Enterprise strategic initiatives

  • Responsible for the overall management of HNW Planning tools/technology (BMO WealthPath, HNW Playbook)

  • Collaborate with all Wealth businesses, P&BB Distribution to ensure a consistent strategy and approach to financial planning at BMO

  • Understand business/group dynamics, HNW planning marketplace trends and identify strategic options to improve business or group results

  • Build implementation plans and define tactics and strategies to ensure successful business results

  • Lead or participate in implementation of strategic initiatives both within LOB and across BMO overall by partnering with lines of business (LOBs); complexities of the initiatives are medium to high

  • Scope of initiatives include people, processes, tools and technology

  • Identify enablers and key issues prior to and during implementation, raise issues with key stakeholders and offer solutions

  • Prepare and update project plans, keep key stakeholders informed of the process and progress

  • Follow up with key stakeholders, coordinate resources

  • Ensure completion of action items by working with key stakeholders

  • Accountable for implementation of initiatives on time and on budget, as agreed with sponsors

  • Work with other areas of the organization and/or external vendors/contracts as required to facilitate the achievement of deliverables and overall objectives


Project/Program Execution of Strategic Initiatives (40%)


  • Lead initiative/program design for HNW planning strategic initiatives by providing subject matter expertise and support to ensure alignment to overall enterprise and group goals

  • Lead the implementation of strategic initiatives within group and across BMO overall by partnering with appropriate senior managers/directors; complexities of initiatives may be high and usually involve multiple stakeholders across the enterprise. Scope of initiatives include people, processes, tools and technology

  • Ensure projects/programs are delivered on scope, time and budget

  • Partner with LOBs to ensure effective change management plans are in place to support initiatives

  • Manage multiple programs/projects simultaneously and resolve conflicting priorities and objectives

  • Partner with stakeholders to ensure effective change management plans are in place to support initiatives

  • Contribute to the successful implementation of the BMO Wealth Planning strategies, program development and plans

  • Prepare project plans and keep key stakeholders informed of the process and progress

  • Perform analysis and develop business cases to assess opportunities

  • Partner with other areas of the organization and/or external vendors/contracts as required to facilitate the achievement of deliverables and overall objectives

  • Project/program management activities include: confirm scope, scale and desired outcomes of a project; recommend and make changes as appropriate; engage sponsors and key stakeholders, design and manage work plan; build business models; establish budget; ensure requirements on change management, risk management and compliance are met; monitor progress and measure results


Leadership and Team Effectiveness (10%)


  • Act as the main relationship management for multiple stakeholders (internal and external) for assigned programs

  • Establish working relationships with key managers within business groups and other corporate areas

  • Partner with other areas of the organization and/or external vendors/contracts as required to facilitate the achievement of deliverables and overall objectives

  • Provides project/program leadership

  • Support development of other team members by involving them in key projects or initiatives; offer peer coaching

  • Partner with management team to provide value-added input in support of Financial Planning success

  • Responsible for managing multiple projects simultaneously and resolving conflicting priorities and objectives

  • As required performs sundry duties

Risk Management & Control (10%)


  • Follow all appropriate risk management and project/program guidelines to mitigate the risk of project/program failure

  • Ensure project issues and risks are identified, quantified, managed and tracked. Use past experience to proactively ”anticipate” risk and develop appropriate mitigation strategies and plans. Ensure risks, assumptions and constraints are appropriately communicated and escalated when necessary

Knowledge:

Undergraduate degree

10+ years HNW financial planning experience

Advanced financial planning experience – tax, estate, trust, insurance, US cross border, business succession

Planning designation (PFP or CFP designation or equivalent)

Professional legal accounting designation (LLB, CPA) or equivalent experience

CLU is an asset

Expert knowledge of financial planning tools

In-depth Wealth Planning experience and knowledge with HNW & UHNW

  • Bilingual (French/English) would be an asset
