Senior Manager HSSE (Regional Ontario)


This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted August 28, 2018.


Responsible for managing day-to-day Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) matters including, but not limited to; asbestos, employee safety, drinking water quality, indoor air quality, hazardous materials/waste management, emergency preparedness, fire safety plans, occupational hygiene and environmental regulatory compliance for the GTA and Ontario. The role will manage all regions and regional escalations while driving consistent HSSE practices and providing leadership across all other regions within the Province. The successful candidate will manage a team of HSSE professionals and provide expertise, advice and training to the HSSE tactical delivery team, colleagues, directors, managers, supervisors, workers and clients.


•Manages a team of HSSE professionals to ensure client and corporate deliverables are met at a field level.

•Develops, implements and monitors HSSE protocols, processes and initiatives to meet regulatory requirements and HSE needs of the client account while ensuring that the highest quality of safety and service is provided and is in compliance with federal, provincial and municipal regulatory requirements and established departmental policies and procedures.

•Works close with the HSSE Programs team to review new and existing programs to assess suitability and the need for changes to ensure consistent delivery across the Province.

•Acts as a resource to staff and internal customers as the HSE subject matter expert for day-to-day operations.

•Manages client escalations and communicate HSE concerns to all necessary stakeholders.

•Assists in the development and implementation of strategic solutions that will support management’s efforts to improve and maintain compliance as required.

•Conduct internal compliance and conformance based health, safety and environmental audits and assist in the ongoing management and closure of findings.

•Conducts site inspections to ensure employees are following safe work practices, implement safety engagement programs and ensure that projects are in compliance with all applicable regulations

•Think resourcefully to interpret complex documents and data sets.

•Motivate others to complete projects and programs on time.

•Experience with health & safety and environmental management systems (EMS) and awareness of generally accepted methods for their development, implementation and ongoing management is considered an asset.

•Promotes safety consciousness among employees by providing accurate and informative data, giving timely feedback, safety suggestions and visibly supporting the safety program(s).

•Reviews and approves HSSE tenant memo’s and consultant reports as required

•Comply with all CBRE policies and procedures.

•Other duties as assigned.


•Bachelor’s degree (BA/B.Sc.) in environment, health, safety or an associated program from four-year college or university and a minimum of 5 years of related experience and/or training.

•Professional designation (EP, CRSP, CIH, ROH, CHSC) desired but not required

•Demonstrated experience managing multiple locations over a geographic area

•Demonstrated knowledge of federal and provincial regulations as well as municipal codes is essential.

•Customer service experience a benefit.


•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

•Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex business documents and consultant’s reports.

•Ability to write professional reports, business processes and briefing notes.

•Ability to present information in a creative and accessible format to varied target audiences.

•Ability to effectively and diplomatically respond to sensitive issues, complex inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, supervisors, and/or management.

•Ability to make effective presentations on general EHS topics to internal departments, large group of employees, clients, and/or management.

•Ability to motivate employees and client groups to take desired action.


•Ability to develop and deliver options analyses intended to mitigate risk to CBRE and the client account.

•Ability to frame sensitive topics with diplomacy and tact.

•Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of options in varied, high-pressure situations.

•Possess the knowledge of the requirements and carry out all duties in accordance with all applicable legislation including (but not limited to) the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Assessment Act and other legislation, as applicable, are implemented and followed.


•Travel across Ontario will be required as part of the role. Approximately 25% of time.


•Decisions made with understanding of procedures, company policies, and business practices to achieve general results and deadlines. Responsible for setting work unit and/or project deadlines. Errors in judgment may cause short-term impact to department.
