Registered Nurse

Belmont House

This is a Part-time position in Toronto, ON posted December 9, 2018.


Reporting to the Assistant Director of Care (and indirectly to the Director of Care), a Registered Nurse will provide clinical nursing services to residents through direct care or coordination of the care team.


(Other duties may be assigned).


Use nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care of residents Prepare and administer medications Document relevant information in point click care, incident reports, Maintain confidentiality at all times related to resident care Supervise HCA’s performance related to resident care Assess sudden changes in resident condition and behaviour and contact appropriate assistance including but not limited to: physician, ambulance, receiving hospital, next of kin, person on call for administration Transcribe and process medical treatments Communicate with residents’ families to inform them of changes, incidents, hospitalizations, etc. Carry out clinical responsibilities which include but are not limited to: admission and annual health assessments of residents; preliminary review of lab results; medication reviews Order, check, and store medication supplies Assist with medical examination and rounds and may be required to act as resident advocate, interpreting resident signs and symptoms and explaining medical regimen and recommendations Transcribes Doctor’s orders Complete assessments and care plans document according to Belmont House Policies and Procedures May be requested to undertake special projects by the Director of Care and Assistant Director of Care (e.g. follow-up on dental reports, review and revision of procedures) Care for psychosocial needs of residents, especially those experiencing difficulty All other duties as assigned by Assistant Director of Care and Director of Care



Advise medical staff of any changes in resident conditions and any concerns regarding the medical regiment for residents Communicate with peers to assure awareness of others of residents’ needs and House matters Communicate with residents and families in a tactful, empathic manner Keep physiotherapist informed of changes and new needs of residents and learn from physiotherapist what activities are to be carried over by nursing Communicate as required with dentists, specialists and the coroner May be in charge at times when management nurses are not on the premises; At these times, has supervisory role over health care aides and decision-making role in resident care and House emergencies Collaborate on Skin and Wound Care issues with Nursing Team Ability to lift and transfer residents safely and instruct others in these skills


Assist with orientation of new staff, at the request of the Assistant Director of Care and/or Director of Care using a pre-established protocol Serve on committees and attend meetings at the request of the Assistant Director of Care and/or Director of Care Supervise students, HCA’s and agency staff


Utilize Home’s resources responsibly Use equipment and supplies in a manner consistent with manufacturer’s recommendations and sound clinical principles Report out of order equipment immediately and remove it from service On night shift, utilize the sterilizer or oversees the use, to assure sufficient supplies for a designated timeframe; Care for or ensure care of the autoclave Count monthly pharmaceutical and other designated stock


Complete all required in-services on an annual basis Engage in research/training activities related to field

  • Adheres to policies and procedures of Belmont House and regulations set out by the Ministry of Health and Long term Care at all times
  • Demonstrates understanding of, and compliance with, responsibilities under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and the organizations’ health and safety plans, policies and procedures. Attends Health and Safety in-services and takes action to address unsafe conditions and procedures, to ensure a healthy a safe work environment.
  • Demonstrates understanding of, compliance with, and commitment to, resident/tenant safety responsibilities and policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for resident/tenants. Attends resident/tenant safety in-services and takes action to address unsafe conditions and procedures.


  • Must have a current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario (renewed annually)
  • Graduate of approved school of nursing
  • Previous experience in a long term care environment preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing and health care practices and techniques as they relate to long term care
  • Basic Heartsaver certification recommended
  • Certification in Gerontology recommended
  • Evidence of continuing education and self development in relevant areas such as geriatrics, gerontology, pharmacology
  • Sound knowledge of and ability to apply and direct fire and rescue operations
  • Knowledge of how to activate the community emergency services
  • Require skills and coordination in psychomotor dimensions of nursing acts such as injections and treatments
