Technical Specialist

SNC-Lavalin

This is a Full-time position in Toronto, ON posted October 29, 2017.

Job Description

We are seeking a Technical Specialist to join our Process Department. The successful candidate will report to the Process Engineering Manager and the Process Lead on the project to which he or she is assigned.

The person in this position will work closely with all disciplines (engineering, HSE, procurement, quality, etc) and project management to manage design responsibilities and to resolve design related issues associated with the project. As leading experts, the Technical Specialist is a key element in the professional profile of the company.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or equivalent
  • A minimum of 20 years of relevant experience in both operations and design

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • A deep and thorough understanding of the field of process engineering in chemical fertilizer industries, with emphasis in Sulphuric Acid, gained through a combination of operational, design-office and site experience
  • An industry expert
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Competent analysing outputs from HYSIS, Aspen, and Hydraulic Systems
  • Knowledge of process safety methodologies: HAZOP, SIL, LOPA among others
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently when required
  • Competent to review and check work carried out by other engineers
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm, client focus, team building and continual improvement
  • A focus on Quality, Operability and Safety

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide process engineering and technical expertise for clients in the Sulphuric Acid industries
  • Provide technical guidance, working instructions, and support the application of sound Engineering principles and procedures to meet quality and performance standards
  • Support all Engineering activities in compliance with applicable Codes, standards and regulations
  • Assist in business development activities, such as the preparation of proposals, development of scopes of work, execution methodologies, and engineering estimates
  • Proficiency in equipment sizing, hydraulic calculations and heat and material balances
  • Provide input to technical evaluations and trade-off studies
  • Review and provide technical input to process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • Review and provide technical input to process equipment specifications and data sheets
  • Review and provide technical input to process safety engineering (relief load estimation, relief system design, and relief valve sizing and selection)
  • Provide input to debottlenecking and troubleshooting studies
  • Provide assistance and support to Operations during commissioning and start-up
  • Conduct strategic technology assessments
  • Write and present detailed engineering reports, studies and briefs
  • Participate in project cost estimates
  • Prepare technical quality audits on multiple projects
  • Must be willing and capable of international travel, as required
  • Act as technical liaison between technology providers, vendors and client’s principal engineering contacts, as required
  • Adhere to quality, health and safety, and environmental requirements
  • Peer reviewer for process engineering work on projects and studies
  • Act as technical consultant on process engineering issues
  • Actively participates in industry conferences and seminars
  • Keeps abreast of technical development
