Staff Accountant

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted May 19, 2018.

Job Description


The Staff Accountant position provides management with financial information by researching and analyzing accounts and preparing financial statements.

The position involves working remotely so a dedicated home office is required with high speed Internet. There will be a future requirement to travel to a physical office location within the GTA within the next 12 to 24 months.

Responsibilities include:

  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Reconciliations of bank accounts, credit card statements.
  • Reconciliation of Government source deductions and tax filings.
  • Monthly reporting to management of financial results on a timely basis
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits; providing information to external accountants.
  • Maximizes return, and limits risk, on cash by minimizing bank balances; making investments.
  • Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
  • Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Complies with federal, provincial, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions, including all provincial taxes, and employee taxes
  • Ensures operation of equipment by establishing preventive maintenance requirements and service contracts; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.
  • Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Job Qualifications:

  • Preferred CPA designation or in mid to late stages of completion
  • SFAS Rules
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks, and ensuring that you are familiar with all modules, including PO and Inventory modules
  • Deadline oriented with exceptional time management skills
  • PC & Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills. Must be able to run reconciliation functions (I.e. pivot table reports, vlookup, sumif, etc.)
