Customs Specialist


This is a Full-time position in Toronto, ON posted August 31, 2017.

Role Overview

The role of the Customs Specialist is to support logistics management in order to increase on time performance, reduce freight costs and ensure compliance with all regulations. This role will review existing processes and procedures to identify opportunities for cost efficiencies, including reviewing freight contracts and rates on an annual basis and negotiating rates to maximize efficient delivery in the most cost effective manner.


  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge and understanding of current laws and regulations related to the custom release processes, refunds, drawback and NAFTA
  • Evaluate NAFTA certificates
  • Ensure compliance with all recordkeeping requirements by NAFTA regulations
  • Work with Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders, as required, to resolve an issues that may occur, including working with vendors, suppliers, carriers and government agencies to ensure shipments do not get delayed in customs
  • Coordinate with customs brokers to ensure timely clearing and release of shipments.
  • Comparison of customs entries and reports to customs invoices to ensure compliance to regulations within legislative time limitations.
  • Manage freight arrangements: Mode of transportation and communication of time constraints, and type of movement, and monitor freight payment.
  • Key contact for transportation carriers, customs brokers and other logistics related companies regarding timely payment in accordance to the terms of their agreement;
  • Manage the compliance policy of the company to ensure compliance with country regulations
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge of domestic and international modes of transportation, as well as accompanying documentation and performs ongoing transportation audit to maintain the best costs available for transportation.

Education and Experience

The successful candidates will have:

  • Post Secondary Education associated with Customs, International Trade, or Import/Export
  • Completion of the Certified Customs Specialist Program (CCS) or the Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS)
  • 5 years experience in Logistics, Supply Chain, and Customs
  • A strong working knowledge of NAFTA
  • A strong working knowledge of customs and regulatory requirements for global sites
  • Ability to understand and be able to classify good with the Harmonized System Codes
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and excellent communication skills
  • Intermediate Proficiency with MS Office
  • Various ERP and Integration Point computer skills
  • Proficiency in developing and creating reports for management, customers and suppliers
  • Self motivated, flexible, detail oriented and able to meet tight deadlines
  • Proven history of establishing relationships with business partners, vendors, and customers
