Intensive Case Management Worker – Hoarding and Bed Bug Controls – Contract Position (Bargaining Unit Position)

Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

Hours of Work:          Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week (variable at times)

Contract Period:        Immediately until January 19, 2018

This position provides personal hands on assistance to specifically address issues related to the residents units and living space, while adhering to the mission statement and policies & procedures of Homes First Society.

 Job Description:

  • assist clients to deal with issues of hoarding, bed bugs and other pest problems, as well as general housekeeping
  • provide regular guidance and encouragement to clients to assist them in maintaining their unit in a safe and healthy state
  • provide regular cleaning of clients’ units and washing clients’ laundry
  • generate solutions and use best practices to address hoarding, bed bug and pest issues of clients
  • assist all of Homes First by sharing best practices and/or solutions
  • assess their needs and develop a strategy or plan of action with/for the client
  • build rapport and encourage the client to participate in their strategy or plan of action
  • work one on one with each client to identify issues of hoarding and/or bed bugs and/or pests and/or excessive clutter in residents units that is negatively affecting them
  • assist the client to develop new skills, new habits and a new outlook to maintain the client’s unit in a safe state
  • reduce the amount of clutter and organize the unit in a manner that is both safe and is satisfactory to the resident
  • work with those incapable or struggling with keeping their units in a safe and healthy state
  • learn skills to maintain and improve their daily living
  • work with client to support and assist them through intense case management framework around issues of hoarding, bed bugs and general housekeeping with a housing first approach in mind
  • if the unit has a bed bug issue, you must prepare and/or assist the client to prepare the unit and co-ordinate with pest control to have the unit sprayed
  • assist with re-organization of the client’s unit and launder all clothing, as well as ensure necessary linens are provided
  • increase the health and safety of those clients incapable of/or struggling with keeping their units clean and free of pests by providing and/or assisting them

 Qualifications:

  • post-secondary education or equivalent
  • excellent organization and time management skills
  • able to work independently and in inter-dependent teams
  • knowledge of the Tenant Protection Act
  • excellent interpersonal and team work skills
  • demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • several years of experience working with people who are homeless, under-housed and who are hard to house
  • demonstrated ability to deal with complicated hoarding and bed bug issues an asset
  • knowledge of tenant population, diversity issues, anti-discrimination practices and systemic reasons for homelessness
  • knowledge of mental health issues and several years of experience working with people with mental health issues
  • ability to work evenings
  • certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset 

Working in an environment where there may be smoke is required.
